Properties of uvrE mutants of Escherichia coli K12. II. Construction and properties of pol and rec derivatives

article
The double mutant uvrE502 resA1 of Escherichia coli K12 is non viable, in contrast with the double mutant uvrE502 polA107. The last strain is slightly more sensitive to UV radiation than the uvrE502 single mutant. The double mutant uvrE502 recA56 is viable; this strain is more sensitive to UV radiation than either parent strain and about as sensitive to X rays as the recA parent strain. The double mutant uvrE502 recB21 is also viable but grows slowly. It is more sensitive to UV and X rays than either parent strain. The frequency of spontaneous mutations in all three double mutants is comparable to that in the uvrE parent strain.
