Morphology of isolated and cultured sinus-lining cells of rat liver

bookPart
Non-parenchymal cells isolated from adult rat liver were examined with TEM and SEM : the endothelial cells, spherical or oval in shape, are characterized by a cytoplasmic vacuolar system which opens to the outside with numerous pores; the Kupffer cells present the characteristic lysosomal system of a macrophage and a surface provided with large lamellipodes. After plating, the Kupffer cells presenting an intense phagocytosis fixe to the plastic; most of the endothelial cells remain in suspension, but some seem also to adhere to the plastic sur face. Elongated spindle-shaped cells remain to be identified.
