Oxidation ditch : Prevention and control of filamentous sludge
article
Recent observations on a small oxidation ditch (150 m3 and designed for 500 inhabitant equivalents) revealed that the way in which the raw waste is supplied to the system may have a profound influence on the sludge quality as far as the prevention of filamentous sludge is concerned. It was shown that the mixing of raw wastes with activated sludge prior to release into the aeration basin resulted in a considerable lowering of the sludge index. Several Dutch oxidation ditches where influents are mixed with recirculation sludge are also characterized by very low sludge index values. Some tentative explanations of this phenomenon are given.
