Wat is de impact van algoritmisch management op de kwaliteit van arbeid en hoe kunnen HR-professionals dit in goede banen leiden?

article
The use of data and algorithms provides organizations with new possibilities for managing their workers. While algorithmic management was previously mainly applied in the gig economy, forms of algorithmic management can increasingly be found in more standard work settings. How do regular organisations implement algorithmic management in their processes? In this exploratory study, we examine the impact of algorithmic management on work quality in regular organizations, based on both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Data from a large-scale survey among employees in the Netherlands suggest that many workers feel more controlled due to the use of new technology. Employees who experience this also report less autonomy, increased work pressure, and more burnout symptoms. However, case examples show that algorithmic management can also be used in such a way that employee autonomy is actually increased, and mental strain is reduced. This results in a mixed picture: the impact can be both positive and negative. The way in which work quality is impacted largely depends on the choices of organizations when implementing algorithmic management. HR professionals and managers can push for an implementation of algorithmic management that benefits both organizational performance and the job quality. To this end, we formulate principles and guidelines.
