This paper describes a research project on annoyance by railway noise, carried out by two TNO-institutes: the Institute for Environmental Hygiƫne and the Institute for Applied Physics. In a field survey, 671 respondents have been interviewed face to face. After the survey was completed a comprehensive programme of noise measurements and calculations was carried out. In this project the LAeq (24 h) in dB(A) - once again - proved to be one of the best predictors of negative reactions towards railway noise. Therefore this noise rate has been used to relate the social survey data to. The most dose-response relationships which have been developed that way, can be described in a similar way. For several peculiari ties in the form of the curve explanations are provided. The influence of factors like a free view of the line and the quality of the noise insulation of the house are discussed. Finally, the effects of railway noise and road traffic noise are compared with each other.
