The Low Noise Design section of the Institute of Applied Physics TNO-TH applies both experimental and numerical (finite element) modal analysis to diagnose, predict and modify resonant behaviour of mechanical structures. This paper deals with the system communication necessary for combining experimental and finite element modal analysis and the advantages this has. Combination is illustrated by measurement and F.E. analysis of a highly damped, thin steel slotted circular saw blade.
