Automatic NMO Correction Using Quantum Computing
conference paper
We present a quantum k-medoid clustering algorithm that successfully automates some of the most complex and time-consuming tasks of Normal Moveout (NMO) correction in geophysics; estimating seismic velocity. We test our algorithm on a synthetic and real field data set. The results for the synthetic data set show nearly perfect results. We find that the real field data set is too large in size for current quantum annealing hardware. Therefore, we try the quantum algorithm on quantum classical hybrid hardware, on which it shows improvement on which most hyperbolic curved events are flattened, showing the robustness of our algorithm.
