Design considerations
bookPart
This chapter is part of a book describing the Generic Intelligent Driver Support (GIDSÄDrive V1041) system which is aimed at integrating modern in-vehicle applications. This chapter deals specifically with the philosophy and design considerations underlying the GIDS concept and the role of ergonomics herein. The types of support functions implemented in the GIDS system are outlined and an overview is given of the Man-Machine-Interface elements applied. A Small World is proposed which includes a wide range of traffic situations in which the GIDS system is evaluated. The acrchitecture used to implement GIDS is discussed and it is argued that a GIDS system should have a modular architecture. The chapter finishes with a discussion of how the system adapts to the workload of the driver and why this is necessary.
