How can we prevent overload of the driver?
bookPart
This paper gives a brief account of work that has been carried out in the Generic Intelligent Driver Support (GIDS Ä Drive V1041) project on Man-Machine Interfaces that adapt automatically to driver workload. Issues relevant for the design of adaptive interfaces are discussed and results of a study on determinants of driver workload are presented. It is argued that in order to prevent overload of the driver by information from various in-car applications, information presentation should be scheduled taking the driver's capacities and limitations into account. In addition, when presenting information, the workload of the driver should be taken into account. A description is given of how driver workload is actually estimated by the Workload Estimator of the GIDS system.
