The impacts of cooperative traffic systems on safety, environment and travel times: A literature survey

conference paper
This paper presents the results of the impact assessment study of ten cooperative systems, conducted as a part of the European project COBRA (Cooperative Benefits for Road Authorities), which aims at providing decision support for road authorities on future cooperative systems investments. This literature synthesis is based on 31 preceding studies, including field operational trials and simulation studies that evaluated the impacts of these systems. Ten V2I/I2V cooperative systems were selected and grouped into three bundles: Local dynamic event warnings, In-vehicle speed and signage and Travel information and dynamic route guidance. The results have been synthesised in a matrix, distinguishing between various indicators for safety, traffic efficiency and environmental impacts. This paper is intended to serve as a basis for future projects and a comprehensive standard reference for readers interested in cooperative system impacts.
