Governance Structures To Scale Digitally-enabled Business Models For Sustainability: Implications For Value Creation And Capture

conference paper
Climate change, rapid urbanization, and biodiversity loss are among the grand challenges affecting society (Ferraro et al., 2015). To address these challenges, organizations are pressured to move towards sustainable modes of operation, innovating their business practices on economic, social, and environmental grounds (e.g., Freudenreich et al. (2020); Bansal (2019); Dey et al. (2018); Ritala et al. (2018)). Research emphasizes that digitalization can enable and accelerate this transition (Ciulli et al., 2022, Parida et al., 2019): digital technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain, Big Data Analytics (BDA), Digital Twin (DT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) enable organizations to improve business processes sustainably, monitor activities to reduce resource inefficiencies, or enhance value propositions for sustainable use by customers (Caputo et al., 2021, Evans et al., 2017, Ghisellini et al., 2016). By leveraging digital technologies organizations can connect to and strive for organizational- and society-level sustainability goals (Bohnsack et al., 2022, George et al., 2021, Pan and Zhang, 2020).
