Shading modelling approach for VIPV

conference paper
With the rising numbers of electric vehicles, the amount of electricity needed for the transport sector will increase substantially. To reduce the stress on the electricity grid, vehicle integrated PV (VIPV) is a promising option. In order to estimate the contribution of VIPV in this reduction, it is important to have a good estimate of the energy yield of VIPV. However, this is not straightforward due to the different shading environments during a trip, urban, semi-urban and rural, and the variation between the trips themselves. In this work we define a model to calculate the irradiance on a vehicle by defining the shading objects at various points along the route. By taking into account the local time at those points, the sun position can be determined in relation to those shading objects to define if the sun is blocked or not. This then results in theirradiance on the vehicle.
