The role of fear in aircraft noise annoyance

conference paper
It has long been recognized that fear contributes to the annoyance response by aircraft noise. The present study focuses on the role of fear in the path from aircraft noise exposure to self-reported effects of noise, including both annoyance and specific disturbances. Analyses are done on original data from two large surveys in the vicinity of a large international airport (Amsterdam Schiphol airport). The effect of aircraft noise exposure on annoyance was found to be mediated by self-reported concern about one's safety due to living underneath an aircraft flight path (fear) as well as by specific disturbances. Furthermore, it was found that fear increased sleep disturbance, concentration disturbance and conversation disturbance due to aircraft noise. The results suggest that fear is a very important factor in the response to aircraft noise, reflecting the important function of fear in the regulation of behaviour.
