Usability aspects of specialized software tools
report
Usability is a recognized quality of software and complex systems. To investigate relevance of usability methodologies for specialized software tools, this exploratory project surveyed the literature, interviewed three TNO-ESI industry partners on their needs, and scanned the usability knowledge landscape in Dutch universities. The literature scan suggests that TNO-ESI should employ a mixed set of usability methods to get complementary insights into tool usability. To ensure the solutions are designed for efficiency and are user-friendly, their validation should include: (1) Quantitative metrics and objective data to comprehensively assess their impact, us-ability, and efficiency; (2) Analysis of user experiences through structured experiments or usability testing. As most TNO-ESI tools build upon a conceptual (methodological) solution, TNO-ESI can explicitly consider the split of: (1) Usability of the method or methodology and (2) Tool usability per se.
