The influence of the free-volume on the cook-off response

conference paper
At TNO Prins Maurits Laboratory (TNO-PML), a considerable effort has been put into the research of energetic materials and their responses to several types of stimuli. In the last few years, a part of this research has been focused on the response to a thermal stimulus (cook-off). The TNO-PML Cook-off test, is now capable of measuring the temperature distribution, the strain and pressure, during the cook-off process. Also, new strain measurement techniques are under development. During one of the test series with Comp B, an unexpected mild explosion was found in the cook-off test. To investigate this more thoroughly and especially the influence of the free volume on the response, a series of experiments with Composition B was performed. The results of this investigation are presented.
