Factors affecting the relation between plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) activity and PAI-1 antigen levels in normals and in patients with arterial disease

article
PAI activity and PAI-1 antigen were measured in 231 plasma samples taken at different times of day and on different days from normal subjects and from patients with arterial disease. The correlation between the two parameters varied according to time of day and group under study. The ratio of PAI activity to PAI-1 antigen was significantly higher in young normals and in patients with acute myocardial infarction, compared to patients with diffuse atherosclerosis or previous myocardial infarction. The PAI activity to PAI-1 antigen ratio showed a circadian variation and correlated negatively with age.
