Alcohol and fibrinolysis

article
This review summarizes the literature on the effects of alcohol consumption on fibrinolysis. In epidemiological studies a positive association between alcohol consumption and fibrinolytic activity has been reported. Experimental studies, on the other hand, have consistently shown decreases in fibrinolytic activity directly after alcohol consumption and after regular consumption for more than four days. The changes are characterized by an increased PAI activity and a decreased t-PA activity. The apparant contradiction between epidemiological and experimental studies requires further study with respect to, amongst others, selection of individuals, the chronicity of alcohol consumption necessary to stabilize the acute effects, and on the possibility of a rebound in fibrinolysis on the long term in case of moderate alcohol consumption.
