The aim of the Committee for Detection and Prevention of Ischaemic Heart Disease is the development and application of screening and intervention methods in order to reduce morbidity and mortality from ischaemic heart disease. A pilot examination was started in 1971 in an industrial population ranging from 40 to 65 years of age. The screening methods have been standardized and all data are processed to a coronary risk profile after each individual examination. The results of about 6,500 investigations have been analysed and show high levels of blood pressure and serum cholesterol as compared to similar data in other countries. Correlations have been found between elevated blood pressure readings, adiposity, high levels of serum lipids and electrocardiographic abnormalities. The predictive value of the screening procedure is still under study. Intervention is based on the risk factors found at the screening and integrated into the coronary risk profile. Advice for better habits is provided by the industrial physician and treatment by the general practitioner. The possibilities to measure the effectiveness of intervention are discussed.
