Serum-cholesterol en lipidenspiegels bij mannen in Nederland; overzicht van bevindingen bij screening van groeper in de jaren rond 1970

article
Findings of serum cholesterol and total lipids obtained by different laboratories in screening 5000 individuals in nine differentsections of the working male population of the Netherlands, are analyzed and classified in normal, borderline and abnormallyhigh levels. Findings among apparently healthy groups of the male population between 15 and 50 years are taken as referencefor normal. This analysis underlines the importance of standardization of chemical analyses. Even when this is fulfilled it appears that thelevel of 300 mg/100 ml as cutoff point for normal cholesterol alone, provides no clear information as to the decision for furtherexamination of individuals, in order to prevent the clinical manifestations of coronary heart disease.
The surveys suggest that among different sections 1 out of 30 to 50 working men of over 20 years have a combination ofabnormally high levels for cholesterol as well as for total lipids, besides 1 out of 5 to 20 high risk cases for total lipids withnormal or borderline cholesterol.
