Systems Biology

bookPart
Systems biology focuses on the systematic study of complex interactions in biological systems using high-throughput genome-wide technologies, such as transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. To achieve the ambitious task of unraveling the complexity of biological systems in a holistic manner, systems biology requires bridging the gap between various nonbiological disciplines such as information technology, mathematics, physics, and chemometrics. Chemometrics is becoming an essential part of systems biology studies owing to its ability to facilitate extraction of relevant biological information from the huge amount of data produced by-omics technologies. This chapter provides an overview of the different aspects of chemometrics applications in systems biology studies, focusing on the nutritional metabolomics field. © 2009 Elsevier B.V.
