Hyperlipidemia and atheresclerosis in APOE transgenic mice

bookPart
Patients with Familial Dysbetalipoproteinemia (FD) are characterized by elevated plasma levels of VLDL- and chylomicron-remnant lipoproteins concomitant with a strongly increased risk for atherosclerosis. Even in healthy people of industrialized societies the plasma levels of remnant lipoproteins is rather high, since people live under non-fasting conditions during most of their life-span. It is commonly assumed therefore that in the Western societies increased levels of remnant lipoproteins is a main contributor to the high risk of atherosclerosis.
