Challenges and potential for offshore floating solar in the Dutch North Sea
conference paper
The past few years there is an increasing attention for the development of Offshore Floating Solar as it is a technology with substantial large power generation potential for emission-free production of electricity for the Netherlands. Especially when this can be applied in the Dutch Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), in particular in the areas used by offshore wind farms. However, it is still in a in a relatively early stage of development. In this contribution an overview will be given of the main research challenges which can be classified into four main categories: 1) Design and construction of offshore solar systems 2) Operation and Maintenance 3) Power production and LCOE and 4) Societal acceptance. Several offshore floating solar system concepts that are currently under development by commercial enterprises will be introduced together with near future plans of pilots and demonstrator projects in the North Sea in the period of 2023-2027.
