Lifting advisor: a strategy for field experts towards improvements based on the ned NIOSH-guideline

conference paper
Despite the fact that industrial processes have witnessed a tnend towards automation, millions of tons of goods and patients are lifted manually, which may lead to musculoskeletal injuries. Therefore experts in the field (e.g. occupational nurses, occupational physical therapists, occupational doctors and ergonomists) need methods for the assessment and improvement of manual lifting tasks. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in the United States has produced a guideline for manual lifting tasks, which is often used, and has recently been updated. Knowledge so far is implemented in a mathematical formula to calculate the recommended weight limit for a specific lifting situation. This RWL should not be exceeded. In using this NIOSH-guideline in the field two problems arise: - it is time consuming to calculate the RWL, and - the steps towards improvement are unknown.
