Studies on the humoral immune response during ageing

article
The ageing process of the immune system starts with a decrease in T cell functions reflecting probably involution of the thymus and a selective decline in certain T cell populations. Impairment of B cell functions seems to be only a secondary event, because any dysfunction in the B immune system was found in old individuals only for responses which require the cooperation of T cells.
Idiopatic paraproteinaemia, a typical phenomenon of ageing, represents ultimately a B cell defect. In the evolution of idiopathic paraproteinaemia an impairment of the T immune system also plays an important role. In conclusion, idiopathic paraproteinaemia can be considered as a symptom and a consequence of an age related immune deficiency.
