Safety evaluation of yeast grown on hydrocarbons. III. Two-year feeding and multigeneration study in rats with yeast grown on gas oil

article
Yeast grown on hydrocarbons according to the gas oil process of British Petroleum was fed to rats at dietary levels of 10, 20 or 30% for 2 yr. Two control diets were used, one being similar to the yeast diets but containing soyabean-oil meal instead of yeast and the other being the Institute's stock diet. A reproduction study over three generations of rats maintained on the same diets was conducted simultaneously. In the 2-yr study no adverse effects were demonstrated on growth, mortality, haematology or blood biochemistry. There were no changes in urine composition or effects on kidney function. No pathological changes were found that could be attributed to the yeast. This study provided no indications of carcinogenicity. The multigeneration study showed no effect on fertility, lactation performance or embryonic and pre-weaning mortality. Parameters investigated in a 3-months feeding study in F3b-generation rats failed to show any adverse effects attributable to the treatment. It was concluded that the yeast examined did not cause any deleterious effects. © 1971.
