TNO report : System architecting for environmental sustainability and circularity – literature review

report
In this report, we summarize a selection of articles from the state-of-the-art in the domain of environmental sustainability and circularity (ESC). In particular, we focus on (1) frameworks connecting business goals and system architect’s technical decisions and (2) design principles for product design. The summary provides a guide to useful information; the reader should study the referenced papers for their complete understanding. Furthermore, we are not aiming for a complete literature review; we summarize the articles which results we used in our project Canvas 2023, a collaboration of TNOESI and Canon CPP. The project focuses on systems architecting for ESC for high-tech OEM systems. Chapter 1 provides a background and a context in which we selected these articles. Chapter 2 summarizes the articles related to the first aspect – relating business goals and technical decisions. We summarize the articles describing business transformation concerning ES&C that can be a helpful starting point when introducing ESC as a top system quality. We also summarize articles that relate the business goals to architectural decisions. Chapter 3 overviews (a) product design principles available in the literature and (b) links between sustainability and other aspects. Informed by the chapter, system developers, e.g., architects or designers, can identify and apply relevant principles to the challenge at hand. Also, they can consider and relate sustainability concerns to other system qualities, indicators, and platform topics.
