Future production scenarios and resulting hydrogen demand 2030-2050

report
Industrial emissions reduction is one of the major challenges in meeting 2030 and 2050 climate goals for northwest Europe. Many uncertainties in available options, their viability, boundary conditions and lack of regulations have delayed concrete action towards an industrial transition away from fossil fuels and towards low-carbon emissions production. In northwest Europe, hydrogen is seen as one of the key of options and drivers of changel. Different approaches are taken in efforts to estimate the hydrogen demand for 2050, but considerable uncertainty remains about where, when and most importantly to what extent hydrogen use in industry will begin to play a role in emissions reductions. Some of these questions have been highlighted in a recent study jointly published by Fraunhofer ISI and TNO through a site-specific analysis of potential hydrogen demand for 2030 and 2050.
