Nutritional health in the adolescent period
article
The concept of nutritional health in the adolescent period is reviewed with stress on the need for proper ability of the body for adaptation to changing levels of metabolism. In reciprocal relationship with physical activity, adequate rest and a balanced environmental and educational "climate", dietary habits must provide the right kind and amount of foods, with not less than 1.5 g of protein per kilogram of body weight in late adolescence, one third to one half of which should be protein of highest biological value. 10-14 % of calories derived from protein and 25-35 % from fat, taken in 3 to 5 meals per day, will under conditions of normal physical activity establish the regulation of metabolism which is needed for the control of nutritional health during the adolescent period and after.
Both in the part of the world where there is shortage of food and in the industrialized countries with abundance of food, nutrition programmes in juvenile health services require more attention of health authorities.
