The importance of diagnostic tests for in vitro use is increasing. This concerns the tests used by laymen, as well as those used by professionals. In this paper the present position is described with respect to legislation. Furthermore, advantages and disadvantages of do-it-yourself tests are discussed as well as the possible role of pharmacists in this field.
