Laboratory tests on the behaviour of cream surface treatments applied on brick and stone

conference paper
A new generation ofwater repellent products, in theform ola cream, was inlroduced on the market afew years ago These
new products can guarantee a deep penetration in the substrate and, due to lheir viscosif and density, allow an easy
application. These properties let suppose that they will find large approval and use in the coming years. It is lherefore of
primary importance lo verifu not only their capability fo stop the ingress of liquid water (water repellent properties) but
also their behøviour in case salts are present in the substrate. In this paper the results ofa laboratory research performed
on traditional as well as on the (new) cream products is presented. The experimental study, performed in the framework of
the EU ASSET project, was carried out in two phases: at first the capøbility of lhe treatment to stop the liquid transport
was evaluated, then the possibitities and the risks of their application on sea salt contaminated substrates were assessed by
means of accelerated Iaboratory tests.
