Simple models for setback stresses durng gun launch

conference paper
As part of MSIAC’s support of NATO efforts in understanding phenomena during gun launched setback, a simple analytical model inspired by the design equation for grain silos was adapted to a right cylindrical shell. Neglecting spin, the setback pressure is asymptotic to a value dependent upon density of charge, Poisson’s ratio, charge radius, depth, wall friction, and acceleration. For high accelerations, the asymptotic pressure can be larger than the measured compressive strength of the material. The analytical model was then adapted to accommodate taper in the shell body and the resulting equations are solved numerically. The effect of taper is to reduce the stresses experienced at the base of the shell and the position of maximum stress moves forward to a lesser depth. Sensitivities and implications are discussed.
