How to combat burnout: A review of insights and directions for the future

In of the last three decades numerous studies have provided insight into the antecedents of burnout and related health issues. Equipped with such knowledge, researchers, policy makers and practioners face the task of translating these insights into the prevention and treatment of burnout. Burnout interventions can be directed at the work organisation and or at the individual. Do organisations sufficiently use the available knowledge about causes of burnout in the working environment? Which strategies to prevent burnout are preferred by organisations? How effective are such preventive interventions? And which interventions may reduce burnout symptoms and enhance work participation among workers who struggle with burnout? This chapter takes stock and provides provisional answers on such questiona.
