The heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engine: towards ultra-low NOx emissions and high performance
conference paper
The hydrogen internal combustion engine can play a crucial role in accelerating the energy transition and meeting the CO2 reduction targets set in Europe's Green Deal. Especially for applications that are difficult to electrify or that are being used on locations with no or insufficient access to the electric grid. This is most relevant for heavy duty equipment. Here, hydrogen engine is a very attractive solution which can become a competitive sustainable power source for various heavy duty applications within an acceptable time frame. Next to CO2 reduction, there is also a driver for low NOx emissions to arrive at a solution with zero environmental impact with or without the use of aftertreatment technology.
