This chapter defines the concept of workplace innovation. It starts with different definitions and clarifies that workplace innovation is an organisational concept and includes outcomes. Workplace innovation is social innovation at the workplace. It requires participative processes to achieve better performance of organisations and outcomes for employees. The concept is positioned in historical and theoretical discussions. The main element of workplace innovation consists of complementary organisational measures which allow for the aimed benefits. At the same time, this complicates the implementation of the concept. Therefore, policy intervention is needed to upscale these implementations.
