Kwaliteit van arbeid en duurzame inzetbaarheid van platformwerkers [Quality of work and sustainable employability of platform workers]

article
In this study, we investigate if there is a relationship between the extent to which platform workers in the Netherlands work via digital platforms and their quality of work and sustainable employability. For this, we use cross-sectional data from the Self-employed Labour Survey (in Dutch: ZEA) 2021 of TNO and CBS (N = 267). In general, we find few significant relations between the degree of platform dependency and the quality of work and the sustainable employability of platform workers. The results of (logistical) regression analyzes do show, however, that the degree to which platform workers work via digital platforms is (1) negatively related to the chance that platform workers experience physical strain at work, (2) positively related to the extent to which platform workers meet the required competency level, and (3) positively related to the physical and psychological work ability of platform workers. The findings in this sample of relatively highly educated, Dutch-speaking self-employed professionals without staff may not apply to other groups of platform workers. By taking into account differences in type of platform workers and platforms in future research, we can optimize the quality of work and the sustainable employability of all platform workers.
