Multi-criteria optimisation for sustainable concrete structures
conference paper
Sustainable development is a complex, multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral challenge with often contradicting
objectives. As such, in the strongly fragmented construction sector often only single aspects of the challenge
are subject of innovations. Therefore the construction sector faces a huge challenge to meet multiple goals set
a.o. in the European Green Deal, 55% CO2 and 50% primary material reduction in 2030. A material with
foremost impact in the construction sector is concrete (8% of worldwide CO2 emissions and >20% of annual
waste). The reuse and recycling of concrete (secondary concrete) may drastically reduce the environmental
impact of concrete. However, the variation in properties of secondary concrete and its effect on structural
performance is currently unpredictable, so it is only used in limited percentages. At the same time, design with
secondary concrete not only needs to fulfill safety criteria, but also environmental and cost criteria.
