Improved monitoring of the EU bioeconomy by establishing additional classification codes on goods and products. D7.10 of BIOMONITOR project

report
The BioMonitor project is an EU funded Horizon 2020 project aimed to provide tools and models to
obtain better insight into the development of the bioeconomy. The overall objective of the
BioMonitor project is to establish a statistics and modelling framework for the bioeconomy that is
effective (supported by a stakeholders’ platform) and robust (compatible with and implementable
in existing systems of statistical and customs offices, laboratories and industries). The framework
will enable the quantification of bioeconomy and its economic, environmental and social impacts in
the EU and its Member States via a wide range of indicators.
One of the tasks (T7.2) is to identify the role of Customs laboratories in the bioeconomy since they
have an important role in the import of goods and products in the EU. In the first phase of
BioMonitor, training workshops for the EU Customs laboratories were planned to ensure adequate
knowledge of the bio-based carbon content analysis method. The idea behind the training
workshops was that the Customs laboratories could provide an important source of data regarding
the development of the bioeconomy.
