Prevalence, trends and risk factors of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) make up a significant part of occupational diseases in the Netherlands and entail high personal suffering and societal costs. In this article we present the prevalence, trends and risk factors of WRMSDs. In 2020 the estimated number of workers with a WRMSD was 424.000, of which 98.000 were new that year. Trend figures of 2014-2020 show a small but significant decrease in WRMSD. A multivariate analysis on recent data from the Netherlands Working Conditions Survey (NWCS) shows that many different characteristics of employees (gender, age, educational level, migration background), company (size), employment relationship, and work (physical and psychosocial factors and work satisfaction) are associated with the risk of a work-related musculoskeletal disorder. In addition, we use the Population Attributable Fraction (PAF) to show which percentage of these disorders can be attributed to different risk factors. Risk factors with high PAF values for new (incidental) WRMSDs are primarily: working with repetitive movements, working in awkward working postures, and high work pressure. These risk factors are therefore good starting points for prevention.
