Klaar voor de toekomst: Mentaal pensioen herstellen met het Vitaal Vakmanschap-actieprogramma [Fit for the future: Reversing mental retirement with the ‘Vitaal Vakmanschap’ action program]

article
This article investigates the effectiveness of the ‘Vitaal Vakmanschap’ action program in the workplace. The ‘Vitaal Vakmanschap’ action program has been developed to support organizations in maintaining and/or restoring the ‘fit’ between employees and work. The aim is to stop and/or reverse the process of mental retirement among employees. In this way, the program contributes to employees being able and willing to continue working longer, healthily and productively. In this article, we examine the effectiveness of the program in three Dutch organizations, namely the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB), Doc-Direct and the National Police. A total of 1,035 employees participated in the program. Both quantitative and qualitative information was collected. The results show that the participants experienced the program as positive. Overall, the level of mental retirement did not decrease between the diagnosis measurement and the effect measurement one year later. However, the decline in mental retirement was greater for employees who actively participated in the intervention(s) in the program compared with employees who participated less actively. Thus, the more actively individuals participated, the greater the effectiveness of the program. We conclude with lessons learned.
