Het verband tussen scheiding en ziekteverzuim [The relationship between divorce and sick leave]
article
In 2019, half of the Dutch employees reported absent from work for at least one day. Various causes may underlie this. One of the possible causes is a personal life event, such as divorce. In addition to affecting the home situation, such life events also affect other domains in a person’s life, such as functioning at work. This cross-sectional study investigates whether divorce or separation (dissolution of marriage, cohabitation or registered partnership) is a possible cause for sick leave. We also assume that there are differences between separated and non-separated employees with regard to perceived health, health complaints, burnout complaints and work-life balance. Data of the NWCS (Netherlands Working Conditions Survey; NEA) and Statistics Netherlands (CBS) were combined (N = 222.699). The results show differences between separated and non-separated employees. Separated employees had a 45% higher absence rate; they experienced more psychosocial complaints compared with non-separated employees; and more often they stated that they neglected their work duties due to family responsibilities and vice versa. Women and employees with a western background, experienced more negative outcomes related to divorce or separation. These results provide leads to support separated employees, for example by developing targeted interventions.
