Energietransitie & biodiversiteit
report
For the transition towards a climate neutral energy system, an extensive new
energy infrastructure will be built in the coming decades. The decision-making
process concerning this transition currently focuses primarily on the amount of CO2
reduction and the financial costs involved. The transition, however, will also affect
environmental aspects, including biodiversity. As the amount and diversity of
species are rapidly decreasing and ecosystems are struggling, the biodiversity crisis
is a real and crucial component in decision making. Knowing the possible impacts
new renewable energy projects may have on biodiversity and how to mitigate these
is important for decision makers to avoid adverse effects. However, this knowledge
is currently not easily accessible, if available.
The goal of this study is to develop a framework that provides an integrated and
user-friendly overview of the effects of the energy transition on biodiversity. The
study will propose topics for further research to increase our understanding of the
impacts of technologies that are required for the energy transition. The findings of
this research can later be translated into recommendations for Dutch policy makers
and decision makers.
