Intelligent Access Policy ensuring the right vehicle on the right road at the right time

conference paper
The evolution of the past decades has shown a constant growth of transport demand and mobility. Nowadays, logistic sector contributes considerably to global CO2 emissions, around 90% of which come from freight transport. A feasible approach that may facilitate the deployment of new generation of green and sustainable road freight vehicles, whilst ensuring the safety and compatibility with existing infrastructure is Intelligent Access Policy (IAP), which is introduced in this paper. Hereon, we propose IAP as logical extension of already existing Urban Vehicle Access Regulation. IAP primarily ensures matching the performance and characteristics of a road freight vehicle with the state and capability of specific section of an infrastructure network. This is beneficial for logistic operators, road authorities and the society in multiple dimensions discussed hereafter. The paper further discusses implementation barriers, success factors and opportunities followed by a vision to deploy the IAP on pan-European level.
