Changing levels of blood-constituents during growth

article
From schoolage through adolescence the changing level of blood constituents is illustrated for hemoglobin, serum iron, serum protein and protein-fractions, alkaline phosphatase and inorganic phosphate. Data have been collected from cross-sectional and sernilongitudinal studies during the passed ro years in the Netherlands. Stress is laid on the individual variability of concentrations in the blood, in healthy children, depending on health, physique, environment and the technique of estimation. During puberty rapid changes occur due to endocrine alterations and its reflection on the metabolism of nutrients. Often deviations from the fairly uniform pattern of chemical growth during adolescence reflect subnormal nutritional health. The relationship between hormones, metabolic enzymes and nutrients is evident, but the truth about these interrelationships requires further research and cannot be discovered until more longitudinal studies have been carried out under controlled conditions.
