Active sonar performance modelling for Doppler-sensitive pulses

Accurate sonar performance modelling is essential to predict likely detection ranges that can be obtained by employing active anti-submarine warfare sonars. Reverberation forms an important source of interference for active sonar performance, the effects of which can be diminished by using Doppler-sensitive pulses. Therefore, it is of importance that the sonar performance model takes into account the effects of Doppler-sensitive pulses in reverberation-limited scenarios. In this paper, we present the approach used in the ARCANE sonar performance model, which allows us to model the additional complexity brought by reverberation and Doppler-sensitive pulses. The resulting predictions for a towed sonar transmitting a continuous wave pulse are shown and compared with measurements presented in literature. The favourable comparison indicates the complexity of reverberation modelling for a moving sonar is well captured.
