Studiedag SONAR (sound navigation and ranging) : IV. Pulsvormen voor actieve sonar

article
The selection of suitable pulse shapes for active sonar is of major importance for the detection of targets against
a background of noise or reverberation (= the compound echo signal lrom the ocean's surface and bottom).
Roughly, reverberation reduction is obtained by manipulating the system's resolution capability in time and
frequency (target range and target speed). The influence of noise is reduced by emìtting a large amount of
energy per pulse, which leads to the application of long duration pulses.
A survey is given of the detection properties of a tone pulse, an FM-pulse and, briefly, of a noise-like pulse.
The features of the various pulses are illustrated by means of expelimental results, obtained at sea and in the
'Nieuwe Water-weg' shipping channel near Hoek of Holland.
