A survey is given on differences and similarities between SONAR and RADAR as far as the characteristics, including those of the medium, are concerned. On active SONAR equipment a short historical survey is given together with a description of older and newer designs. Finally some examples are given on special techniques of using SONAR equipment in order to overcome the difficulties of short ranges obtained under conditions of strongly varying velocity of sound propagation.
