Jongeren, loopbaanperspectief en burn-outklachten [Young workers, career prospects and burnout complaints]
article
The issue in this research is whether and how the high burnout complaints of young workers in the Netherlands are due to the employment relationships in the flexible labour market. We argue that uncertain career prospects enhance the probability of burnout complaints. We expect that young workers more often show burnout complaints in their first career jobs than in their student jobs, and that complaints are more frequent in flexible than in permanent career jobs. We use the Netherlands’ Working Conditions Survey 2016 (Nationale Enquête Arbeidsomstandigheden) to test these expectations. The analyses show that job insecurity in career jobs is an important source of burnout complaints among young workers. There are considerably more burnout complaints in career jobs than in student jobs. We also find significantly more burnout complaints in flexible career jobs than in permanent career jobs. The reason is that there is less insecurity in permanent jobs, which is not fully traded off against the higher job demands.
