Recent developments in biodeterioration research (four communications)
article
Research on biodeterioration of materials has been reported previously in "TNO-Nieuws" (ibid. 13, 398-405 (1958). Meanwhile this work has received considerable impetus from the formation of an international Group of Experts under the aegis of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Paris. For the first time a forum of interested scientists was thus constituted. Desirable research activities have now been realized, or are considerably expanded. Further a new magazine, the "International Biodeterioration Bulletin" was started in England. Its aim is to provide a rapid communication among specialists and the bulletin is therefore seconded by the Group of Experts. It is expected that progress reports by this OECD group will appear regularly in the bulletin. Accordingly, it seems appropriate to initiate a series of short papers on certain aspects of pertinent TNO-work. The article opening this first series of four papers deals with future aspects of the cooperative OECD venture. Two contributions provide descriptions of analytical methods developed by the Central Laboratory TNO. The fourth article summarizes an unpublished item of earlier international co-operation, in which TNO also participated.
