Gezondheid en langer doorwerken: Resultaten uit de Study on TRansitions in Employability, Ability and Motivation (STREAM)[Health and the prolonged work participation]

article
In general, the relation between health and work participation is strong but ambiguous. In the Study on Transitions in Employment, Ability and Motivation (STREAM), this relation has often been studied. In this article, we summarize the results. Research questions were the following: how are health issues related to prolonged work participation? Which health issues have the most impact? To what extent can work characteristics affect prolonged work participation of workers with health issues? Results confirm the adverse effect of health issues on work participation, in particular in case of reduced work ability and functional limitations. However, effects differ per type of health issue. Workers with psychological health issues leave the workforce more often prematurely than workers with other types of health issues. On the other hand, workers with poor self-perceived mental health leave the workforce less often prematurely than workers with poor self-perceived physical health. High levels of autonomy en social support decrease the risk of an early exit from work due to health issues. In the discussion we elaborate on these results.
