Shared values for health, safety and well-being at work

bookPart
The roles of shared values in creating (psychologically) healthy workplaces that are good for the health, safety and well-being at work are described and discussed. First the importance of aligning and sharing organizational and individual values is addressed. Then attention is paid to the impacts of adopting health as an organizational value. This requires a broad and positive understanding of health and its impact on all activities of the organization. There are also supporting values that are linked to what Douglas McGregor called “the human side of the enterprise”. The focus is on seven values (trust, participation, interconnectedness, justice, responsibility, growth and development, and resilience), which are associated with 29 value factors. The process of implementation is then addressed, including the selection and definition of values, commitment, communication, integration into processes, operationalization and dialogues, using supporting structures, and reviewing. The chapter ends with a synthesis and conclusion.
